Power Sisters

De fotoserie ‘Power Sisters’, een project van Perrine Philomeen met fotografie van Iris Haverkamp Begemann viert de community van kickboksvrouwen in Amsterdam, Nieuw-West. Sisterhood en empowerment staan hierin centraal.
Perrine Philomeen verhuisde naar Slotermeer. Het Amsterdam dat niet wordt gekenmerkt door grachtengordels, maar door enorm veel kleur, verscholen in grijze gebouwen. De Nederlandse kunstenaar werd hier omarmd door de lokale vrouwelijke kickboks community, een hechte groep van voornamelijk Marrokaans-Nederlandse moslima’s. Hier maakte ze kennis met een niet eerder ervaren gevoel van community. Met Power Sisters viert ze de kracht en sisterhood die ze heeft ervaren tijdens de lessen.
Achter de deuren gaan hijabs af en bokshandschoenen aan. Er is ruimte om kwetsbaar te zijn, je eigen grenzen op te zoeken en elkaar aan te moedigen. De leiding wordt hier niet alleen genomen door leraar Assia: iedereen wordt in het proces betrokken. Hierbinnen ervaarde Philomeen dat we als vrouwen, ongeacht culturele of religieuze verschillen, verbonden met elkaar zijn.
Als art director wilde Philomeen deze bijzondere community visueel vastleggen. Hiervoor werkte ze samen met fotograaf Iris Haverkamp Begemann, die bekend staat om haar werk waarin ze streeft naar een inclusieve hedendaagse samenleving. Door middel van mode en styling creëerde Philomeen samen met kickboksers Aya, Ouassima en Yasmina een perspectief waarin kracht en vrouwelijkheid de boventoon voeren. Sportieve -speciaal door Philomeen ontworpen- hijabs, felle kleuren en gedurfde make-up, vertellen voor haar het verhaal van de nieuwe generatie van Nieuw-West. Met deze fotoserie hoopt ze westerse stereotypen over moslimvrouwen te tackelen en biedt het een krachtige reactie op de negatieve beeldvorming in de huidige media. Power Sisters van Perrine Philomeen is een ode aan de vrouwen, de community die haar met open armen verwelkomde, en de buurt die ze inmiddels met trots ‘haar thuis’ noemt.

I invited inspiring friends to join forces.
To celebrate together the process of becoming who we are, supporting each other and having fun with textiles!
It was a great success, I sold a lot of scarfs, there were a lot of people and we enjoyed it to the fullest!

Hijab in transition
Rotterdam 2018, a city with an increasing diversity of people and cultural expressions such as clothing. The hijab catches the eye, the headscarf worn by Muslim women.
The hijab symbolizes faith, Islam, but also the identity of Muslim women. The hijabistas are a worldwide movement of young, fashion-conscious Muslim women.
Hijabistas reject the idea that the hijab stands symbol for oppression. For them, the hijab is a way to express their femininity, empowerment and style and thereby break free of the stereotypical image of the Muslim woman in the Western world.
Perrine Philomeen wants to increase the attention for the hijab in the fashion world. With her designs she responds to the needs of the hijabistas.
Through this photo series, Philomeen shows the speed at which cultures visually merge and at the same time she brings an ode to the hijab as a fashionable and meaningful piece of clothing.
